Drug sweep nabs locals

Local, state and federal authorities on March 1 conducted a “takedown” of a drug trafficking operation involving local residents and three Georgia residents.

Those arrested, according to Wise County/Norton Commonwealth Attorney Chuck Slemp, were Rebecca Owens and Christy Doffermyer, both of Big Stone Gap; Terry Cook, of Lee County; and Roy Lee Dykes, Leila Valetta Hector and Timothy Terrell Peek, all of Georgia.

According to the Wise County Sheriff’s Office, the Southwest Virginia Drug Task Force and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives “conducted a takedown of a suspect from Georgia that was supplying crystal methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and prescription narcotics” to Wise, Scott and Lee counties.

Three search warrants were executed in Wise County and three searches warrants were executed in Georgia. Seized items included crystal methamphetamine valued at more than $14,000; cocaine; heroin; prescription medication; marijuana; more than $12,000 in cash; two guns, one of which was stolen; a bulletproof vest; a stolen vehicle; and moonshine. Additional charges and arrests are expected.

Other agencies involved include Virginia State Police, Wise County Sheriff’s Office, the commonwealth attorney’s office, the Big Stone Gap police department, the Virginia attorney general’s office, the U.S. Marshal Service and the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
